Amarillo police said a 45-year-old woman died in a crash on Washington Street near Interstate 40 Thursday afternoon.
The woman, identified as being from Amarillo, was driving a black Lexus car northbound on South Washington Street and collided with the rear of a northbound tow truck stopped in the street’s middle lane.
Police said the female driver appeared to have switched lanes at the last moment before colliding with the tow truck.
There were no other occupants in the car. The tow truck driver was not injured.
Alcohol is not considered a factor in the collision, police said, but speed may have been.
The northbound lanes of Washington Street were closed at Wolflin Avenue. Police expect the roadway to shut down for at least three hours for the investigation.
